Autism Awareness Month

Autism 3:16.

Apparently, April is Autism Awareness Month. And April 2 is specifically Autism Awareness Day.

So, consider yourself aware, I guess.

And for those of you asking: we derive our powers from the Yellow Sun of Earth.

And, in the meantime, read up on my write-up about Pop Culture’s singular greatest depiction of autism:

Osaka from Azumanga Daioh, trying on a pair of glasses.
Ayumu freakin’ Kasuga. “Osaka” to her friends.

Azumanga Daioh the Animation: J.C.Staff and Sentai Filmworks.

The crux of the issue is as follows:

It means a lot to see Osaka and Sakaki, people like me, being happy and surrounded by people who care about them.

They’re weird, but they’ve got people who love them. They’re relatable. They’re happy. They’re nice. Like I said, they’re living their best lives.

They’re living lives I want for myself…

“You belong” shouldn’t be a controversial statement or some impossible dream.

I’ve got more thoughts (plus an analysis of Azumanga Daioh as a triumph of early 21st century anime here):

And, like, honestly, just being aware of autistic people requires absolutely no effort on your part, so, I don’t know, maybe actually do something and try being good to autistic people.

Incidentally — yes, I am quite proud of the “Autism 3:16” byline.

It’s a wrestling thing
