The Treasure of Oake Island, but I Google Translated it Ten Times

“Jonas Darkstone wanted to talk about his brother. But Dorian Darkstone is a man who needs no introduction.”

Continuing my experiment of putting my stories through Google Translate multiple times, here’s The Treasure of Oake Island.

This time, I went English [I use Commonwealth English, I assume Google defaults to American], Finnish, French [presumably France-French, rather than Quebecois French], Irish, Japanese, Welsh, Spanish [presumably Castillan], Croatian, Vietnamese, Arabic [there are many dialects of spoken Arabic, but my understanding is that they all use the same written form], back to English. I wanted to avoid Germanic languages to see if it would handle the “-gard” in “Realmgard” differently.

It did not…

As it turns out, punctuation and capitalisation was a major issue with this one and I could never seem to make up its mind consistently. Notably, the same line of dialogue will sometimes get multiple different styles of quotation marks.

Chapter 1

Jonas Darkstone wanted to talk about his brother. But Dorian Darkstone is a man who needs no introduction.

Every Port Haven resident has a story about Dorian: the terrors of the sea, the predators, and the deadly sharks. Between facing the constant threat of death, achieving unprecedented wealth and fame, and marrying the beautiful eldest daughter of one of the richest families in Port Haven, Jonas always knew I was living a great life and showed it to my brother.

Jonas didn’t really know how Dorian could marry a woman as generous and thoughtful as Estelle Winfield.

I still remember the day Dorian and Estelle announced that they were married.

“We’re going to get married,” Estelle said, showing off the big, shiny ring on her finger.

Jonas stared at him for a moment, then exclaimed, “Have you ever seen Dorian?”

However, Dorian Darkstone is a very suitable father to his two daughters. Jonas notes that Dorian gave up his career as a world-traveling pirate for the sake of his wife and daughter, demonstrating a level of good judgment and self-sacrifice not usually seen in most sailors, thieves, and Darkstones.

Despite Dorian’s success as a pirate and family man, Jonas is still a little jealous of his younger brother. He has achieved so much in life that he cannot be jealous of other people’s achievements, even if his own are not as legendary or interesting as his brother’s.

Hitting people and robbing them is Dorian Darkstone’s job. Professor Jonas Darkstone’s career has contributed greatly to the cultural heritage of Port Ann Tavern, shaping the next generation of intuitive minds.

He thought his hat was much prettier than his.

Even when Jonas makes a mistake and becomes jealous of Dorian, it is difficult for him to stay that way because Dorian’s daughters are his daughter’s best friends in the world.

Which is a good thing, because Annie has always had trouble making friends. Thanks to Cat and Dunstany, he has all the friends he needs. Kat and Dunstana are Annie’s third sisters and are not cousins. Jonas tries to visit Kat and Dunstan whenever possible, and Annie often looks forward to these visits. In fact, Annie spent most of the day jumping up and down, reminding him of his arrangements to visit them later that day.

“Dad, let’s go!” » Annie pulled him away from the table and pulled his arm to encourage him. – Kat and Stana are waiting for us! Annie led Jonas out of the office and down the stairs around the corner.

“Have fun,” his wife, Peregrina, called them, and glanced at the door of the sewing room. Most people in Port Haven have stopped pronouncing Peregrina, so they usually call her Peri, just as Antica became Annie.

Even Jonas instinctively started using the nickname thanks to hearing others call him. Annie is more like her mother than Juna. But this is not surprising. With her pink hair and pointy ears, she is not part of the Darkstone faction of her family.

However, it is clearly stated that it is a half item. Hair and ears are the most prominent features of the jinn found in hybrid children. Annie has pink hair like her mother. “Mother, come with me,” said Annie. “it is fun!”

“Thank you, honey,” Perry replied. “But I have so much to do, I don’t think I have the time.” He looked over his shoulder towards his room. “Countess Zeppelin needs a new dress for the weekend.” He frowned. “And it tastes very unique.”

“Okay,” Annie replied. – I’ll tell you everything.

“Thank you,” Perry replied, and disappeared into the sewing room.

The Darkstone brothers married women with successful careers. Estelle runs her parents’ department store and Perry makes the dresses. Although generally a small and quaint operation, Perry has attracted some notable clients.

“Let’s go,” said Annie, grabbing her hat from the hook next to the door. “Good luck with that dress,” Jonas shouted to his wife as he followed Annie out the door.

Dunstana Darkstone sits on the back of the living room sofa and looks out the window, waiting for Annie and Jonas, and decides that Jonas might be her favorite uncle.

In fact, if you look closely, you’ll find that all of his uncles are beloved uncles.

But Uncle Jonas is the only one who has to deal with this problem.

Not only is Jonas one of the best professors in Realmgard, he is also one of the best archeology professors at the University of Port Haven, and perhaps in the world.

Danstana said the field of archeology includes excavating ancient ruins, lost cities, ghost mines and other places that have been uninhabited for hundreds of years. This makes Uncle Jonas in a way a pirate, but not a pirate at all.

Pirates like Dunstan often kept the treasure they found to sell and get rich.

Archaeologists display their finds in museums and write long, boring books about them. Dunstana believes that being an archaeologist does not mean much. I’d rather have the treasure.

He talked about it with his uncle.

He said archaeologists help people learn about the past. This is important to the cultural heritage of Realmgard and to protect future generations. Dunstan usually stopped listening at this point.

I’d rather have the treasure.

Dunstan took a deep breath. “They never come here.”

“You’re three minutes late, Dunstan,” Kat said as she sat on the large striped sofa in the living room of her familiar apartment.

As Danstana continued to look out the window, a movement in the street awakened her desire, but only the postman arrived and she continued on her way.

Some neighbors’ dogs chased him.

Finally, Danstana focused enough on the task at hand that a knock on the door caused her to scream back to reality. With a heavy heart, I opened the door and saw my uncle and cousin standing at the entrance.

“Hello, Captain Kidd,” Jonas said, grabbing his niece’s hair. “How can I avoid the problem?”

This nickname originated from the cat but has now spread to the whole family. Dunstan doesn’t care, because then everyone will know he’s a real pirate captain.

“Not really,” Dunstan admitted sadly. “I shot Kat in the eye with a gun.” It lit up instantly. “But it’s okay now.”

Jonas looked seriously at the little pirate. “Why did you shoot my sister, Captain Kidd?”

“It was an accident,” Danstana shouted. “Bounce, bounce.”

“In my opinion,” Kat said and rose from her chair.

“Are you still on the couch? Kat, have you moved at least once since you got home?” Jonas called his niece.

I’m not sure where Kat ends and the couch begins. At this point, they are mixed.

“Yes,” Kat said of her career. “I have to go upstairs to sleep.”

Jonas smiled. “I understand it’s better to use the Adventure License,” he said.

Kat pushed and stretched out in the chair. “I’m still waiting for the test,” he replied, yawning and stretching out and getting comfortable on the couch.

– Hey, Stana! Annie said as she came out from behind her father and waved.

“Hello, Annie!” answered Dunstan.

“what’s up?” Dunstan asked when she noticed that her cousin had some kind of tube in his armpit.

Danstana has seen this before. People use them to transport paper. Apparently every piece of paper that Jonas and Annie brought with them was at least 100 years old.

“Wait a minute, I’ll show you,” Jonas said.

After Jonas and Annie hung up their coats and hats, they moved into the living room. Annie placed the tube on the living room table, opened the cap, went in, took out a crumpled piece of paper and spread it on the table.

Danthana went to see his cousin to get a closer look. The cat was also curious and eventually sat on the sofa.

“It looks like a towel,” Kat said. msgid “Use a handkerchief.”

“Yes,” Jonas admitted. – It’s about him.

“Why are you showing me your scarf?” Kat asked.

“Because there’s a treasure map on this napkin,” Jonas replied. He showed me a map hastily drawn on a napkin. “See? It looks like Port Haven. And X is somewhere along the coast.”

Jonas flipped the handkerchief over to reveal a message written on the back. Danstana looked at him and began to read: “My friend, take care of him.” Uncle looked puzzled. “Who is T? What is this?”

“Keep reading,” Jonas said. Danstana turned to the scarf. “That’s a sign, isn’t it? And it says Captain Newgate. Wait, I know him!” I said. “My pirate book says he stole 775 horses from the royal dwarves… metal… big? Huh?”

His explanations faltered when he encountered words he did not remember or could not pronounce. Select “Metal Guy”.

“The Royal Jeweller,” said Annie.

“this thing!” Dunstan agrees. “this person!” Grimac smiled. “But who is T?”

“Maybe he’s a member of Captain Newgate’s team,” Jonas replied. “Or at least someone you trust to protect your treasure.”

“How did you get William Newgate’s treasure map?” Kat asked. “No one would give you something like that. Even if it was just a towel.”

“Technically, Perry understands that,” Jonas explained. “Someone gave a theater student at his college a box of old clothes, and he found them hidden in one of the pockets of an old coat he was repairing there.”

– Is this correct? Kat asked.

“Indeed,” Jonah replied.

“Where does this lead?” » asked Dunstan. “Where is this store located?”

“Captain Kidd, buy me an Admiral’s card,” Cat said.

Dunstana went to her father’s office, and Dunstana took a large map of Port Haven and the surrounding area and brought it to the office. Kat looked at the map above her sister’s. “What island is located southeast of Port Abang?”

“Oak Island, sure,” Annie said. “Most of the other islands are large pieces of sand or rock sticking out of the water. Ynys y Derw is the only island large enough to contain buried treasure.

Kat wanted to ask how Annie knew that, but she already knew better.

When she’s not in the fields helping her father, Annie always has at least one book on hand. He reads very quickly. He never seemed to forget what he read.

Family and friends relied on it like a computer and a living encyclopedia.

“You should tell your parents you’re going to Oak Island,” Jonas said, studying the map.

“Good,” Danstana nodded vigorously and left the room to find her parents. “Mom! Dad! Uncle Jonas is taking us on an adventure!”

“I don’t want to,” Jonas laughed.

Wow. Poorly-translated “I don’t want to take my nieces on an adventure.” Jonas is cold.

This one ended up going a little less off the rails than Fryte’s Gold did and nothing really ended up going in some bizarre dark of vulgar weird new direction.

Mostly, the translation seemed unable to decide if Kat was a person or actually a cat.

I did notice this time around that Google Translate will auto-correct things that it thinks are mistakes — so “Oake” which is supposed to be a name got changed to “Oak” like the tree — I decided to leave the auto-corrects in, since it felt like it added to the Bad Translation aspect.

Also, I’m not sure how “orichalcum ingots” ended up as “horses”…
