Music to Write Realmgard to: The Ocean

Singing to an ocean, I can hear the ocean’s roar
Play for free, I play for me and play a whole lot more, more!

I originally wrote this one when I was desperate for posts to tie in to the Tales of the Sea Giveaway I was involved in. And you can’t really get much more on-the-nose than a song literally called The Ocean

Of course, on the other hand, the ocean in this case is, in fact, metaphorical. In this case, the ocean is the crowd the band is looking out over when playing a gig.

Though, admittedly, the lyrics are probably equally valid when applied to the actual ocean:

Singing to an ocean, I can hear the ocean’s roar
Play for free, I play for me and play a whole lot more, more!
Singing about the good things and the sun that lights the day
I used to sing on the mountains, has the ocean lost its way

Interesting musical aside, The Ocean was recorded during a session held in a house, rather than a proper studio, so there’s plenty of extraneous background noise in the track, including the mics picking up infamously wild drummer John Bonham saying “We’ve done four already but now we’re steady” before the band starts playing and even a phone ringing in the background.

It took me a while to actually be able to hear it, in part because I think I wasn’t entirely sure what a phone from 1973 sounds like, but I finally managed to make it out at 1:47 in this recording of the original vinyl version of Houses of the Holy.

I haven’t been able to hear it in this remastered version of the song, but that may be because it got remastered out:
