Realmgard History Lessons: Sandovech

Sandovech

Sandovech considering the components of a sandwich.

While specific details of his life are rather obscure, Sandovech’s name is one of the most famous in Realmgard thanks to his contribution to its culinary history — namely, the placing of meat between two pieces of bread.

It is generally assumed that Sandovech was born into a family of Emperor Theobald’s vassals who served in minor positions at Theobald’s court. In time, Sandovech himself came to work in the palace kitchens, eventually rising to the rank of Emperor Theobald’s personal chef.

Living the life of an energetic monarch and conqueror, Theobald spent many years of his reign on campaign, often necessitating him to eat his meals when and where he could. While not the first person in known history to use bread as a means to conveying food, Sandovech is credited with the innovation of using two slices of bread as a means to eat essentially a complete meal on the move.

Thus, the sandwich was born in its recognisable form, to quickly spread throughout Realmgard and beyond as a popular foodstuff. Theobald was so impressed by his chef’s ingenuity that he rewarded Sandovech with a duchy and the noble family that are his descendants still retain minor holdings in modern Gallicantu.
