Unicorns

Commonly known — both poetically and disparagingly — by the Elven term “equus acutis”, meaning something like “pointy horse”, unicorns are indeed that. While fundamentally otherwise physically identical to mundane horses except for their striking colouration and the horns protruding from their foreheads, unicorns are thought to have an ultimately magical origin due to the incongruity of their horns.

Although unicorns popularly typify elegance and regality, actual unicorns are infamous for their temper and uncooperative interactions with Humans. While unicorns are often initially aloof, though not usually openly hostile towards Humans, once a bond of trust has been established between, unicorns are known to be fiercely loyal.

Unicorns have not yet been domesticated as a species, though individual unicorns with whom Humans have fostered a bond will allow themselves to be ridden or as draft animals, though they are intelligent enough to respond negatively to being disrespected. Such unicorns are generally viewed less as pet and more as companions or even equal partners.

While unicorn horns are generally ascribed all sorts of special powers and still sought for magical, medicinal, or artistic uses, they are not, in fact, particularly exceptional in nature and it is not uncommon for unicorns in the wild to often damage or break their horns, which then regrows fairly easily.
