I’ve probably been going pretty heavy on The Sword since I started going through my author playlist again at the start of the year. On the one hand, they are my favourite band. But, also, we just so much snow over the last couple days, that it feels fitting to revisit a song from an album called “Age of Winters.”
From thei 2006 debut album Age of Winters — which, incidentally, I own on vinyl — comes Lament for the Aurochs. FYI: an Aurochs was, in fact, a real animal, generally understood to be the ancestor of modern domestic cattle, having gone extinct some time in the 1600s.

Now, Lament for the Aurochs basically promises what it delivers, with a general description of the decline and fall of the old world. But what most impresses me about its broadly Fantasy-y lyrics is the notable scheme of alliteration and rhyme:
Harken to the howl of the huntsman’s hounds
Lyrics via Musixmatch.
Or the clarion of kingdoms doomed and drowned
Lost to these lands is lore of the high ones
Sunless skies await the return of the archons
