Encyclopedia Realmgardica: Gigacrabs

Among the most dangerous species of marine fauna in Realmgard.

Gigacrabs

“A huge and terrifying something, crawls straight out of Jonas’ nightmares and through the hole in the floorboards, unfolding into its full form.

The closest word for it is probably crab, but it’s about fifteen times bigger than any crab he’s ever seen…”

Several adventurers fighting a Gigacrab.

The Gigacrab is among the most dangerous species of marine fauna in Realmgard.

Though Gigacrabs are not generally known to eat humans, they are commonly held as extremely dangerous, due to a combination of their aggression, territoriality, sheer size and near-impenetrable carapaces. Though apparently rather rare and generally elusive,

In most jurisdictions in Realmgards, Gigacrabs are legally identified as hostes omnium gentium, meaning “enemies of all people”, allowing the creatures to be freely and openly hunted.

There is something of an industry centred around hunting Gigacrabs — in addition to the aforementioned bounty being a appealing prize to adventurers and hunters, the carapace of a Gigacrab is a sought-after material for weapons and armour, and several particularly eccentric gourmands consider the meat of the Gigacrab to be a delicacy.

Hunting a Gigacrab is considered by many to be one of the greatest tests of an adventurer’s mettle.

Incidentally, there’s a Gigacrab in Sony’s E3 2006 Press conference this week’s chapter:
