Spring 2024 Daily Writing Challenge: Day 30

Like unto a noble spirit embiggening the smallest man, magic embiggens Dunstana.

Well, today’s the end of my 30 Day Spring Writing Exercise.

The recap of the last 10 days and of the whole 30 days will be coming along shortly.

Like unto a noble spirit embiggening the smallest man, magic embiggens Dunstana.

“Well, well, well,” the bandit says, as Kat, Dunstana, and the Lyte Brigade come along. “If it isn’t the Lyte Brigade.”

“Awesome!” Nolan says. “People are finally starting to recognise us! I think we made it, guys!”

The second bandit turns to the first.

“Are they a book club or something?”

“Ugh,” Nolan groans. “Lyte and Lit sound nothing alike, people!”

“You know, we could start a book club,” Tancred muses. “It would be a great team-building exercise. That’s right up your alley, isn’t it, Captain?”

“I can recommend any number of Krimson Katja books,” Amara says.

“Is she wearing clothes in any of them?” Matilda asks.

“Quiet, you,” Amara answers.

“I have found a new cookbook that we could discuss,” Falcata offers.

Kat unsubtly clears her throat and starts reaching for her bow.

“Guys,” Nolan says. “Not the time.”

“Yeah. Let’s fight them!” Dunstana says as she draws her Magic Lake Sword. And, as always, totters precariously trying to balance herself. “Whoa.”

“Dunstana,” Kat says wearily. “Just stop trying to use that thing. At least until you’re bigger.”

“You’re still just jealous of my Magic Lake Sword,” Dunstana mutters.

Bigger,” Amara mutters, thoughtfully touching her chin. “Of course.”

She turns to the little pirate as she struggles to brandish her Magic Lake Sword.

“Hold still, Dunstana,” Amara says. “I have an idea. I think it will help.”

Dunstana feels Amara’s magic surrounding her. The world starts looking and feeling different.

She finally understands what’s happening, even though she notices at least one major issue with Amara’s plan.

“Wait,” Dunstana asks. “How does shrinking everyone else help? Wouldn’t it be easier to use, like, embiggen me?”

“Yes, Dunstana. It would,” Amara mutters, wearily rubbing her nose. “That is precisely what I did.”

“Oh,” Dunstana says.

Her eyes go wide.

“Awesome!” she exclaims. “Now I’m finally big enough to use my Magic Lake Sword! This is the best day ever!”

“Amara,” Kat groans. “Now she’s going to want someone to make her big whenever she wants to use that sword.”

“Oh hush, Katherine. Let her have her fun. And why are you pouting? You’re a goddess’ chosen hero!”

“Don’t remind me,” Kat mutters.

Her arm still hurts from the nymph sent to encourage her to accept her

Meanwhile, in the timeless halls of the gods of Realmgard, the nymph Voitheia begins to reach for her poking-stick and prepares to alight to the mortal world.

Finally able to manage the weight and momentum of her Magic Lake Sword, Dunstana surges forward.

“Oh geez,” one of the bandits groans. “She’s got a sword. I think it must be magic. It’s all, like, glowy.”

“And there’s seven other ones!”

“Lyte Brigade,” Nolan says, “move out!”

He catches himself.

“And Kat, too. I guess.”

“Yeah, thanks, Nolan,” Kat answers.

Nolan watches as the embiggened Dunstana charges off into battle.

“And, uh, Dunstana, you just keep on doing what you’re doing.”

“Bwa ha ha!” the enormous Dunstana laughs, running after the bandits.

“Aw, lucky,” a thoroughly jealous Pela mutters.
