The Oake Island Hornet

Legally protected by statute in the territory of Porthaven due to the belief that the species is endemic exclusively to Oake Island, the Oake Island Hornet is an alarmingly large but unusually docile species of hornet.
While there is little Human activity and no permanent habitation on the small island, activity deemed to threaten the population of Oake Island Hornets is punished severely by the laws of Porthaven.
Due to being the object of fear, scorn, and suspicion, Vampires tend to prefer isolation and seclusion. Nevertheless, known Vampires are commonly blamed for whatever misfortunes may befall the local community.
Though the sting of the Oake Island Hornet is known to be quite painful, most people who have suffered such stings have generally no one but themselves to blame. What Human activity does occur on Oake Island usually occurs on the beaches, while Oake Islands generally built their hives in the trees of the densely-forested centre of the island. Due to the lack of easily-traversible routes through the centre of the island, people do not generally reach the centre of the island.
Additionally, Oake Island Hornets are known to be uncharacteristically peaceable for a hornet species. While they will swarm to defend their hives, Oake Island Hornets are not generally aggressive unless provoked and are generally more like bees than other hornets in their temperament.
Again, there’s no real major real-life inspiration for this. I mostly just needed a plot device for The Treasure of Oake Island and ended up settling on hornets.
