Spring 2025 Writing: Day 35

None days til Easter.

Well, it’s Easter —

Incidentally:

— which means it’s the last day of my Spring 2025 Writing Exercise.

I’ll be posting the full list of links to each of the scenes tomorrow.

“That’s the orb! She has the orb!” Kat hears a voice cry. “Get her!”

“I knew it!” Kat groans, clutching the weird orb she’s hastily wrapped in the table cloth. “I knew this thing was cursed.”

“It’s not really a curse,” Prima offers.

“Yeah. It’s more a bunch of dudes trying to steal it,” Vera agrees.

“Just go!” Kat tells the twins.

“Get her!” the same voice cries. “That’s the Orb of Cursemodias. We it need for cursing people!”

Kat shoots a knowing look at the twins.

“Okay,” Prima says with a shrug. “So the orb is cursed.”

“But,” Vera continues. “That just means we need to keep it away from them. They’re going to curse people!”

“Yeah,” Kat sighs. “That’s bad. Okay, that just means it’s even more important that we get to Scarlet now. She’ll know what to do.”

“Oh,” the brute brute at the head of the group pursuing them, angrily shaking his fist at them. “You’ll regret running afoul of the Cult of Endless Curses. You’re going to get such a cursing when we get the orb back!”

“Why are we still standing here?” Kat groans. “Go!

With that, Kat, Prima, and Vera start running, and the Cult of Endless Curses run after them.

“What if we try to use the orb to curse them?” Prima offers.

“Absolutely not,” Kat replies. “We don’t even know how it works! I’m not going to risk getting us extra-cursed!”

“Don’t worry,” Vera says, dashing ahead of Kat and her sister. “I have a plan.”

She ducks into a nearby doorway, where a large bucket has been set on the porch.

“Oh, Vera. Not again,” Prima groans, slapping her face over her hand.

Vera snatches up the bucket and flings its contents at the cultists, splashing them all with the water.

“How do you keep finding water to throw at people?” Kat asks, dumbfounded so much that the orb almost slips from her fingers.

“What can I say? I have a gift.” Vera says, smirking as she admires her handiwork.

“A gift…” Kat repeats incredulously. “For… splashing people? With water?”

Kat sighs and rolls her eyes. Somehow, this is still not the weirdest thing Kat has seen someone do in a fight.

Thank you very much, Dunstana.

“My eyes!” the cultist at the head of the group shrieks. “My beautiful eyes! I need them to curse people! Oh, this is the worst Spring Festival ever!”

Blinded and bewildered, the cultist stumbles around the street, eventually bowling over the first of the other cultists following along after him and causing a chain reaction of as he topples over into the next guy, who in turn topples over into the next guy — and it goes on like that until all of Kat, Prima, and Vera’s pursuers are groaning in a heap on the cobblestone.

“Curses!” one of the cultists cries.

“Finally!” Vera cries jubilantly. “It worked!”

She turns eagerly to her sister.

“See? See? I told you it would work, Prima! Eventually…”

“It’s a Spring Festival miracle,” Prima mutters.”

Technically, this one is a follow-up to the scene from Day 16, but mostly because I just wanted to use the phrase “It’s a Spring Festival miracle” and having Vera’s ‘splash them with water’ plan finally working was the first thing that came to mind.
