Soon, the hills are echoing with the thunder croaking of dozens of angered Mountain Toads. At the head of the amphibious army, Alda sits astride the Toad in the lead, directing the others as the hop inexorably towards the poachers.

“Yup,” Dunstana says with a decisive nod as she surveys the Gardens.

The days are getting longer. Sleeves and pant cuffs are getting shorter. The last of the snows have finally melted away. The flowers are blooming. The trees are budding. The geese are flying back north — except for the Aurorean Contrarian Geese, which are flying back south…

“Spring has finally sproing,” she declares.

“Beware the Phosphorescent Squaliform Thanatobeast, my son!” the old fisherman perched on the wharf cries as Kat passes by.

“I, uh, I’m a girl,” Kat mutters.

“The children call me Weasel Girl,” Adelgundis says.

“And you don’t mind?” Nolan asks.

She shrugs. “I pay little mind to the opinions of the two-legged. Weasels are much better company than orphans.”

“Talk to me, goose.”

Dunstana looks down hopefully at the bird tucked under her arm. The goose honks noncommittally.

“Come on!” Dunstana says. “You’re the one who got us into this mess! The least you could do is help a little!”

Dunstana had snatched the goose away from a group of pirates who’d wanted to just stick into the pot for lunch.

It seemed like a good idea at the time…
