On the list of things I expected to see in the news this week, “Lord of the Rings anime” was definitely not one of them.

Yet here we are.

You might even say that this news snuck up on me…

Pro Wrestler Randy Orton delivering an RKO, captioned "not unlike a certain Randal Keith Orton" in reference to sneaking up on people.
You knew this joke was coming.

[There are several mistakes in that article: Helm’s Deep is not the fortress; the fortress is the Hornburg. Helm’s Deep is the ravine the fortress was built to defend. And it’s “Middle-earth”, not “Middle-Earth.”]

The short version is that Warner Bros. announced plans for a Lord the Rings anime prequel, set in Rohan during the reign of Helm Hammerhand (about 250 years before the events of movies/books).

Kenji Kamiyama is attached to direct. Now, I wasn’t initially familiar with the name, but upon looking up his filmography, I recognise a lot of the things he’s been involved with.

Honestly, I’m not sure how I feel about all this.

A confused-looking man shrugging.
It’s been a while since I’ve been able to use this picture.
It is a gem.

I think I want to like this. But I don’t think I can.

I like anime. Rohan is my favourite part of Lord of the Rings. Helm Hammerhand (so named for his propensity for punching to death the enemies of Rohan) is the best king of Rohan.

But I can’t help but feel like this is a cheap, cynical cash-in resulting for a boardroom full of executives throwing meaningless buzzwords and Twitter trends at each other.

I’d love to be wrong about this, though.
