Spring 2025 Writing: Day 20

Kat Darkstone: The Magical Girl of magic and girls,

I’ve previously toyed with Kat becoming the chosen hero of the goddess Pherais. And since several of my recent scenes have been inspired by my favourite anime The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! and since Magical Girls play a not-insubstantial role in said anime, here’s Kat being a Magical Girl.

“Ugh,” Dunstana groans. “You’re doing it wrong!”

Kat rolls her eyes. “Sorry I’ve never been a Magical Girl before,” she mutters.

“Well, first things first,” Dunstana says. “You need better poses. Get, like, more sassy with your hips!”

“What does that even — Stop that!

Feeling the familiar sensation of the dreaded poking-stick jabbing into her side, Kat wheels towards the nymph Voitheia, whose ongoing attempts to conform Kat to the will of the goddess Pherais have consisted primarily of poking her with a big stick.

“You’re the chosen hero of a goddess!” the nymph cries. “You could at least act like you care!”

“I’d care a lot more if I wasn’t stuck in this stupid skirt!” Kat cries back, tugging at the ridiculous custom that has been manifested onto her person by the divine will of Pherais.

“That is the sacred panoply of Pherais herself, thank you very much!” Voitheia says indigantly. “And I don’t see why you’re so hung-up over the skirt. You’ve got leggings!”

And then she starts poking Kat again.

“And,” Dunstana continues, “you need to work on what you’re going to say to the bad guys before you start fighting them. Like, I am Kat! The Magical Girl of… um, magic and girls!”

“No,” Kat has simply.

“That is absolutely ridiculous,” Voitheia says, directing her ire at Dunstana for once.

“Thank you!” Kat says, directing appreciation at the nymph for once.

However, it doesn’t last.

“She’s honour-bound by her sacred duty to recite the War-Encomion of Lady Pherais before every battle with the forces of evil,” the nymph explains.

“Right. And then she can say she’s the Magical Girl of magic and girls after she tells them about the economy,” Dunstana says.

The nymph nods pensively. “Maybe we can workshop that,” she mutters.

“Alright. Cool, cool, cool,” Dunstana muses. “Let’s go find some bad guys. I want to see Kat throw her headband at them.”

“It’s a tiara,” Kat mutters. “And that is not a thing.”

“Actually, it’s totally a thing,” Voitheia says. “You pull of your tiara, you do the incantation, and then you huck it at the bad guys. Easy-peasy.”

“In Aurora and Middelmere, I think they say ease-zed, pease-zed,” Dunstana notes.

“That is not a thing,” Kat mutters.

“Okay,” Voitheia says. “Ket’s find you some evil to stomp.”

She takes out a large crystal orb and peers into its depths.

Kat can vaguely see shapes inside the orb.

“Let’s see,” Voitheia murmurs. “Cat stuck in a tree. Kid stuck in a well. Fallen tree blocking a village well. Pirates, bandits, burglars. Bandits burglarising pirates.”

She looks up at Kat.

“Looks like you’ve going to have a busy day, hero,” she says. “And the sooner you become a real hero, the sooner I can go back to the Aionia Megara and bask in Lady Pherais’ presence again.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be helping me?” Kat asks.

The nymph sets down her orb and reaches for her poking-stick.

“And if you start slacking off…”

She glowers at Kat and brandishes the stick.

Man, everybody is pondering orbs these days…
