Here’s Day 1. Fittingly, it’s about writing…

I’ve established that Amara is an aspiring author, and I guess things haven’t really gotten any easier since we last checked in on her.

Not like I can relate, or anything…

Amara Gemina Valda can’t help but feel a certain amount of pride that she is turning out to be one of the most popular and sought-after new author of adventure stories in Porthaven. The city’s literature aficionados – even her beloved circle of romance readers! – can’t get enough of Steel-Grey Saoirse

Which of course means her editor is being quite insistent that she deliver the next Steel-Grey Saoirse story as soon as possible.

Which of course means she has to sit down an actually finish the confounded thing.

Which is proving a titanic quest worth of the heroine herself, since Amara finds herself completely and utterly out of new story ideas.

With a groan, she slumps over her desk, burying her face on the blank page beneath her.

“This is unbearable Katherine,” she laments, her voice muffled by the parchment. “Writing is still the hardest thing in the world!”

“Well, um…” Kat offers, looking up at the ceiling as she lounges on the fainting couch on the opposite wall of the study. “Maybe write some more?”

“You are no help at all, Katherine!” Amara mutters.

She bolts upright as a flash of inspiration occurs to her.

“I have it!” she cries jubilantly, reaching for her pen. “Finally! I have the idea for the next story!”

She glances over at Kat.

“You see, Katherine. In this particular adventure, I do believe that Steel-Grey Saoirse will have to save herself and her dear companion Carolina the Quick from a calamity brought upon them by Carolina’s ineptitude.”

Kat sits up and furrows her thick eyebrows. “Wait. Isn’t she based on me?”

She blinks at Amara in bemusement.

“Amara, are you mad at me? I didn’t do anything!”

“No, Katherine. I’m not mad. Just frustrated at you for the moment.”

“I didn’t do anything!”

Amara ignores her and sets to work. Soon, the only sounds in the room are Amara’s pen scratching against the parchment and her own muttering to herself as she puzzles out Steel-Grey Saoirse’s next adventure.

“Hey, Amara?” Kat speaks up, becoming increasingly bored and hungry as Amara continues to be so engrossed in her fictioneering as to be entirely oblivious to her presence.

Amara holds up a finger as her pen blazes across the page. “Do please hush, Katherine. I’m focusing.”

“So, uh, I’m gonna go for a snack run,” Kat tells her.

She interprets the lack of response as implicit permission to raid the kitchen.

“Cool,” Kat says, standing up from the fainting couch. “I’ll back in, like, an hour. Maybe two. You know what, just find me when you’re done. Good luck with the, um; Saoirse-ing.”

And with that, she steps out of the study and strides towards the kitchen, contemplating what sort of foodstuffs she could potentially use as a substitute for bread while making a sandwich. She finds herself wondering how many entire roast chickens there are down in the kitchen…

Meanwhile, Amara is writing how Carolina the Quick is hoping to find several entire chickens when she and Steel-Grey Saoirse raid the enemy’s larder.
