June Realmgard Short Scenes Day 23: Vera’s New Trick

Spoiler: Vera splashes people

I think I’ve kinda stumbled in a story idea for this one. I’ve established that Vera like to splash people with water (for some reason) and I’ve written a few of these scenes where Prima and Vera meet Tenebella.

I can see potential in having Tenebella teach Vera magic.

Which she will inevitably use to splash people…

Also, why a goose?

Mostly because it’s funny, but also because I’m pretty sure the previous scene that involve Kat and the goose were written about exactly a year ago – specifically the one I wrote for the first day of Summer 2025 was on my mind because the first day of Summer 2026 was a couple days ago:

“Don’t worry,” Vera says. “I have a plan.”

Please do not just splash them with a glass of water,” Prima groans.

“What? No. I don’t need to do that. Tenebella has been giving me magic lessons,” Vera explains.

Prima stares thoughtfully at her sister.

“Vera, are you just going to cast a spell that splashes them with water?”

“…Yes.”

Prima sighs.

Vera glances at the group of thugs now coming around the corner of the alley the two sisters ducked into.

“Do you have a better idea?” she asks.

Prima sighs again.

“No,” she admits.

“Right. So, I’m going to splash them.”

“Fine.”

Vera casts her spell. A bubble of water begins to coalesce at her fingertips, growing until it’s bigger than she is. She hurls it at the thugs and Prima watches it burst among them, though unfortunately not with enough force to really do anything.

The thugs aren’t knocked over. They’re not washed away in a mighty flood of magic torrents shaped like horses.

They just kind of wet now…

“Keep practicing, Sis,” Prime mutters.

“You know what?” the leader of the thugs bellows for the mouth of the alley.

Prima and Vera flinch back from him, doing some frantic mental math concerning how they’re going to get out of this one.

“You can keep that magic book you stole from the Boss!” the thug declares.

Prima and Vera blink in surprise.

“Wait. What?” Prima mutters.

“I just hope you two get papercuts!” the thug declares.

“And then get lemon juice on your fingers!” a second adds.

Hand over her heart, Vera gasps indignantly.

“Rude!” she exclaims.

“Joke’s on you. The boss was throwing out that book anyway!”

“Then why did he send you after us?” Prima asks.

“It’s the principle of the thing!” the leader of the thugs insists. “You can’t just go stealing things from people!”

“You just said he was throwing it out!”

The thug scoffs and dismissively waves his hand. “This is too much trouble. No book getting tossed to the curb is worth this. You got us wet! Now we have to change clothes!”

“Yeah. We might catch colds.”

“My socks are wet! Gross.”

“Excuse us,” the thug says to someone at the mouth of the alley that Prima and Vera can’t see, squeezing past the newcomer.

Once the thugs have left the alley and rounded the corner, Prima and Vera can see Kat Darkstone standing at the mouth of the alley.

A thoroughly bedraggled, soaked, and immensely unhappy Kat Darkstone…

“What the heck?” she cries.

Prima and Vera flinch.

“Kat?” Vera cries.

“What are you doing here?” Prima asks.

“I was coming to help you!” Kat says. “But you splashed me!”

“Sorry,” Vera mutters.

“Why are you holding a duck?” Prima asks.

Goose,” Kat mutters.

She sighs.

Long story.”

She looks gravely at the two Elven twins.

“The least you could do is buy me dinner now.”

“Okay, but we are poor, starving orphans,” Vera notes.

Prima jabs her in the ribs with her elbow.

“I mean — uh, yeah. Dinner sounds great. I could really go for a nice, fat roast…”

The goose under Kat’s arm honks angrily at her.

“…beef?” Vera offers.

“Do I even want to know what happened?” Kat asks.

Prima sheepishly coughs into her elbow.

“But, uh, on a completely unrelated note, we, um… found this new magic book that Tenebella might be interested in,” Vera says.
